DSL

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a technology with lots of twists: ADSL, VDSL, IDSL, and SDSL are a few of the ones available. Knowing what these technologies are and how they affect the performance DSL can have for your business is important in choosing the right service to meet your needs.

DSL is an important technology for smaller businesses and particularly for connections to remote business and home office locations. For business applications such as VoIP, latency and jitter are key factors for satisfactory performance. Because of the low latency and jitter in a DSL connection they become the transport of choice for critical business connections.

Location is key in determining the type of DSL that is available. Where the carrier has built out the necessary infrastructure to serve a particular area varies greatly even within a single metropolitan area. It pays to use a network expert like the OBJ Group to sort through the carrier options and determine the best DSL solution for your location.

ADSL

The most common DSL connection is ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). ADSL is called asymmetric because most of its two-way bandwidth is devoted to the downstream direction, i.e. data coming to the user. Depending on the carrier and offering with ADSL up to 6.1 Mbps can be set downstream and typically 896Kbps upstream.

SDSL

SDSL, yes symmetric DSL, provides the same bandwidth in both directions. While SDSL has greater range (i.e. it can be connected farther from the serving office) it is not offered by as many carriers.

VDSL

VDSL (very high rate DSL) is starting to become available and provides much higher data rates, although over shorter distances from the serving office. However speeds up to 20 Mbps may be available if you happen to have a business location that is served by the technology.

Which types of DSL and which speeds are offered by the carriers and how these types and speeds fit into your business requirements are critical to successful deployment of DSL.
