If your business uses a large amount of long distance in the home calling area this can result in monthly bills that are not the value you anticipated.
  • Billing Increments – A great long distance rate with a 1 minute billing increment is not a good deal. When looking at total cost for long distance billing increments of 6 seconds or less produces significant savings for you.
  • Rounding – The way a carrier rounds their cents per minute rate based on the billing increment above makes a significant difference in charges at the end of the month. Hint: Rounding to 4 places is best for your business.
  • Fees – Looking at most carriers long distance bills will make your eyes swim with all the different fees. While some fees are mandated taxes, many of the fees are not. The OBJ Group considers universal access fees (which are not the same from each carrier), monthly service fees, PIC fees, and others so your analysis is inclusive.

Dedicated Long Distance Service for Businesses

With dedicated long distance service, a T1 or PRI is installed directly from the carrier to your telephone system or PBX. These 23 or 24 lines are then available for long distance calls outgoing, or 800 toll free calls incoming. Dedicated long distance usually becomes cost effective if you are spending over $1,000 per month on long distance service. The long distance rates are lower than “switched long distance” (i.e. long distance routed over your local business lines), but there is a monthly cost for the long distance T1/PRI.
