How to Easily Navigate the Complications of Choosing a Business Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Provider
For years there has been a buzz around VoIP in the telecommunications world – the buzz is now reality. One of the most popular products business is installing today is VoIP based – Integrated Access. This combination of Internet Access with voice lines is the way to leverage VoIP as a communications solutions using technology to increase Business Value.
Integrated Access – How does it work?
The transport, or connection, between the carrier and your location is a dedicated Internet T1 (or multiple T1’s bonded together if additional bandwidth is required.) Most carriers provide a preprogrammed router that is “plug-and-play” to your existing network.
The Voice connections, delivered via VoIP over the T1, can be:
- Regular telephone lines or trunks.
- DSS/T1 voice trunks
- PRI trunks
- Bandwidth is dynamically allocated with voice traffic having priority. The Internet T1 is 100% available for Internet traffic until a voice call is received or initiated. While a voice call is “up,” the bandwidth for the voice call, which depends on the carrier and the protocol used, is prioritized for the voice connection and “taken away” from the available bandwidth for other lower priority Internet traffic. Once the voice connection is terminated the bandwidth is once again available for Internet traffic.
- 911 is provided for calls on the Integrated Access T1
Integrated Access has become the first true Business VoIP product to become widely used in the business community because it is:
- Reliable – Our customers find it to be as reliable as regular business line connections.
- Functional – High speed Internet is always available, with guaranteed upload and download speeds. All the voice connection types you expect are offered.
- Economical – Not only does IA interface into your existing telephone system without ANY changes or modifications to your equipment – most businesses save between 10 and 30% over existing carrier expenses. Plus most carriers throw in a bundle of long distance minutes at no additional cost.
As businesses struggle to be profitable, the right communications technologies can be a big factor in achieving this goal. Integrated Access is a technology that can be utilized at no additional equipment cost while reducing overall expense.

SIP
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the use of VoIP to facilitate the connection of PBX’s to the Internet, replacing the traditional telephone trunk line. While SIP has not yet reached its full potential, for those businesses with fully enabled IP PBX systems SIP is a very viable communication solution.
SIP Benefits and Functionality:
- A high speed Internet connection is used to transport the SIP connection to your IP PBX. SIP Trunking replaces PRI, DSS/T1 or standard telephone lines with telephone service over a data network.
- Capable of delivering more functionality than a traditional telephone connection, unified communications functions such as: chat services, conferencing, “presence applications” that provide awareness of the location and availability of employees, and the ability to share applications.
- SIP Trunking offers remote DID capability allowing you the option to provide local numbers to customers in remote rate centers, plus most carriers provide aggressive long distance inclusions.
